This is what some DAA members will be doing:
The Tennis Foundation will be delivering the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters (https://www.lta.org.uk/major-events/international-events/nec-wheelchair-tennis-masters/) on this date and we will be posting a lot of inspirational stories on our social media channels.
Disability Sheffield are proud to announce that on International Day of Disability, 3rd December 2016, in partnership with Showroom Cinema and Warp Films, we will be screening the BAFTA nominated film Dead Man’s Shoes at 2.30pm. The cult classic film directed by acclaimed British director Shane Meadows (This is England) and co-written/starring Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Hot Fuzz) who has talked publicly about his life with Asperger’s, takes a stark look at the effects of disability hate crime. This exciting opportunity also gives attendees the chance to see the Sheffield Voices Hate Crime short film on the big screen for the first time. The short film raises numerous issues about disability hate crime, and encourages all of us to not only talk about those issues, but take action. All proceeds from this screening will go directly to Disability Sheffield, helping the charity to continue to provide vital support to disabled people throughout Sheffield.
Disability North will be hosting a large scale event in honour of the International Day on 3 December at Gateshead Leisure Centre from 11 am – 4 pm. The theme this year is sport, a fitting and exciting theme given this year’s Rio Paralympics. The event will be host to an array of speakers including Pop Up Gym founder and Leonard Cheshire Entrepreneur Award finalist, Drew Graham. There will also be an exciting range of inclusive sporting activity sessions for delegates to trail. Gateshead Special Olympics will be hosting boccia and athletics sessions while the council will host Zumba and Badminton. Everyone is welcome to participate and the event is entirely free to delegates. Both local and national organisations will be present, hosting outreach stalls and promoting their causes. For more information on the array of speakers, activity sessions and organisations present at the event, please visit our website: http://www.disabilitynorth.org.uk/InternationalDay.html
First Bus will be launching a video to endorse their safe and better journey cards, followed up by engagement with Ministers.
